VCU Children's Hospital of Richmond construction progress photo collage of prefabricated components

Digital Building Components recently installed the last exterior panel for VCU Children’s Hospital expansion in Richmond, Virginia. Digital Building manufactured 42,000-sq.-ft. of X-Series EIFS/MCM panels to execute an efficient, cost-effective prefabricated build approach. VCU’s newest addition, the Wonder Tower, is a 16-story, 500,000 ft2 space for inpatient, emergency/trauma, and outpatient care. The new infrastructure also features an above-street bridge to the main hospital branch.

DPR Construction, Digital Building’s parent company, was selected as the general contractor for the Wonder Tower expansion project. DPR strategically chose Digital Building to manufacture and install the exterior panels with its X-Series EIFS panels. A prefabricated build approach undoubtedly fast-tracked VCU’s Wonder Tower construction timeline. The expansion was initiated due to high patient demand, particularly during the height of COVID-19. With an accelerated project schedule, the facility may open sooner to provide patient care and new employment opportunities. Timing is critical, especially for healthcare facilities that commonly take longer to complete construction.

Another crucial element of this project is the location, which spanned an entire city block. Prefabricated exterior panel installation reduces disruptions and noise levels and is ideal for small space and proximity construction projects. After completion, VCU anticipates opening the Wonder Tower in spring 2023 with new healthcare and educational opportunities for the Richmond area.
